Mary Youngs is the blood bank services manager at South Bend Medical Foundation. After graduating from St. Mary’s College with her Bachelor of Science, Mary joined our team in 2008. As the sole community blood bank in the Michiana area, blood donations and Mary’s role in testing the blood prior to transfusion is absolutely crucial. We sat down with Mary to talk about her role and are now happy to share her answers:
What is your role at SBMF and what responsibilities come with it?
I manage Blood Bank Services. My responsibilities include oversight of the manufacturing and quality of blood products collected and distributed as well as clinical testing performed for doctors’ offices and hospitals throughout the state of Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan. I’m also responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and accrediting agencies including College of American Pathologists and American Association of Blood Banks.
Why are blood donations and your role in the blood donation process important?
There is no substitute for blood. The local and national need for blood donations never ends so consistent donations are necessary. My role in the process is to ensure the product we make meets all FDA requirements for safety and purity prior to transfusion.
Why is SBMF’s work an important part of providing healthcare in the area they serve?
South Bend Medical Foundation is the area’s only community blood bank, and area physicians depend on us for this service. We are fortunate to have dedicated donors.
What makes SBMF a special place to work?
SBMF has been a fixture in the region for over 100 years. Many of my colleagues have become friends who have had long careers here.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like being on or around Lake Michigan.
